Cowboy Junkies

released their first album "Whites Off Earth Now" in 1986, on their own label.  which was not uncommon for Canadian acts in those days (see Jane Siberry).  This was the first step in what was to make the Cowboy Junkies a household name.   The band got signed to RCA Records, and their next release, "The Trinity Sessions", which they recorded in an church, was a huge success on the college charts.  Their "Pale Sun, Crescent Moon" album received much praise from fans and critics alike, and a little while later the band moved on to sign with Geffen Records.  The Cowboy Junkies, featuring Alan Anton, Michael, Peter, and Margo Timmins, have sold over 4 Million albums, but that's not their greatest achievement, their greatest.
