Margaret Laurence

was born Jean Margaret Wemyss, in  Neepawa, Manitoba.  Here mother died when she was 4, and her father eventually married her sister, who was a librarian, and a teacher; she no doubt had a major influence on the young Margaret, who began penning stories at the age of seven.  After finishing secondary school, Margaret got a job as a reporter for the Neepawa Press.  Later, she got married to an engineer named Jack Laurence.  It was when his his work called for him to move to England, then to Africa that Margaret Laurence's first major literary achievements were born, mostly based on her  experiences living in Africa.  Margaret and Jack were divorced a few years later, and she returned to Canada, settling down in Lakefield Ontario.  Margaret Laurence has written many important works, including "The Diviners", and "The Stone Angel", she has receiver over 14 honorary degrees, and was awarded the Order of Canada.  She died in 1987.
